Itinerary

Arrive in Tanzania

You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your arranged hotel in Moshi/Arusha town, you will meet your guide who will brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure you have all the necessary mountain gear. Gear which is missing can be rented on this day.

Day 1. Londorossi Gate (2,100 meters) – start point 2,360 meters to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,820 meters)

The Northern Circuit Route begins in the West at Londorossi Gate (2,100 meters), the same starting point as the Lemosho Route. The drive to Londorossi Gate takes about two hours from Moshi and much longer from Arusha. At the gate, you will register with the Kilimanjaro National Park authorities before being driven further up the mountain to the trailhead starting point. Most tour operators provide lunch here before beginning the short first-day trek to MtiMkubwa Camp (2,820 meters). If you’re lucky, you might see elephants or buffalo emerge from the rainforest onto the path as you make your way to your first camp. When you arrive at MtiMkubwa Camp, dinner will be served.

Day 2. Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,820 meters) to Shira Camp 1 (3,610 meters)

On day two you will spend the first hour trekking through the last section of rainforest path before entering the low alpine moorland zone which follows up onto the Shira Plateau. The trek is short and gradual, concluding at Shira Camp 1. (3,610 meters).

Day 3. Shira Camp 1 (3,610 meters) to Shira Camp 2 (3,850 meters)

The trek crosses the Shira Plateau on day three, from Shira Camp 1 to Shira Camp 2. Nine-day trekkers usually spend the night at Shira Camp 2, where they will meet up with Machame Route trekkers. It is worth trekking a little higher up the plateau at Shira Camp 2 to enjoy the stunning view across the valley below and the Western Breach of Kilimanjaro above. Because the plateau is exposed, expect a cold night with temperatures dropping below zero. Trekkers on an eight-day hike will continue east up the Shira Plateau ridge to Lava Tower (4,600 meters), then return via the Northern Circuit to Moir Camp (4,200 meters).

Day 4. Shira Camp 2 (3,850 meters) to Moir Camp (4,200 meters)

Day four is a long trek east, passing through the ‘Garden of the Senecios’ before entering the high alpine desert zone. The morning will be spent trekking up to Lava Tower and the iconic Shark’s Tooth rock formation at 4,600 meters, where lunch will be served. After lunch, you’ll join the northern circuit, which will take you down to Moir Camp at 4,200 meters (see map above). This is an important day in your trek because you will experience high altitude and then sleep at a low altitude, which is beneficial to your acclimatization process.

Day 5. Moir Camp (4,200 meters) to Buffalo Camp (4,020 meters)

The 5th day begins with a moderately steep climb out of Moir Valley. Trekkers can take a short detour here to reach the 4,375-meter summit of Little Lent Hill before returning to the Northern Circuit trail. From here, the trail contours around the northern slopes of Kibo to Buffalo Camp via a series of inclines and declines (4,020 meters). The trek provides spectacular views of the plains north of Kilimanjaro, which extend all the way to the Kenyan/Tanzanian border. You will arrive at Buffalo Camp shortly after midday, where you will eat lunch and rest after a long day of hiking.

Day 6. Buffalo Camp (4,020 meters) to Rongai Third Cave (3,800 meters)

The sixth day begins with a climb up the Buffalo Ridge and then down into Porfu Camp, where lunch is usually served. The trail then heads east around the northern slopes to the 3,800-meter-high Rongai Third Cave. The trek is shorter than the day before, and you should be well acclimatized to the altitude by now. You’ll get to the Third Cave around mid-afternoon.

Day 7. 3rd Cave (3,800 meters) to School Hut (4,800 meters)

The 7th day involves a steady ascent up and over the Saddle, which sits between Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. Trekkers then proceed south-west up to School Hut (4,800 meters). After arriving at School Hut, you will be served an early dinner and should get some rest before being awoken before midnight to begin your summit attempt. Before going to bed, remember to pack all of your gear, including warm clothes, insulated water bottles, snacks, a headlamp, and a camera.

Day 8. School Hut (4,800 meters) to UHURU PEAK (5895m) to Crater Camp (5,790m)

Start your summit approach before dawn. You’ll arrive at Uhuru Peak in the early afternoon, when there are few other people around. Crater Camp, set in soft sands near the famous Furtwangler Glacier, is reached after a short descent. Crater camp is not a route in and of itself, but rather a challenging extension that can be added to any route. It entails sleeping overnight in the crater’s bowl. An incredible experience enjoyed by only the most daring climbers.

Day 9. Crater Camp (5,790m) to Millennium Camp (3790m)

After an early breakfast, we begin our descent by returning to Stella Point and then descending on the scree slope past Barafu camp for a short break before heading down to Millennium Camp for a well-deserved rest.

Day 10. Millennium Camp (3790m) to Mweka Gate (1630m)

Start your summit approach before dawn. You’ll arrive at Uhuru Peak in the early afternoon, when there are few other people around. Crater Camp, set in soft sands near the famous Furtwangler Glacier, is reached after a short descent. Crater camp is not a route in and of itself, but rather a challenging extension that can be added to any route. It entails sleeping overnight in the crater’s bowl. An incredible experience enjoyed by only the most daring climbers.

Tip on Mountain Kilimanjaro is recommended for group sharing as following:

On Kilimanjaro, temperatures can easily range from the high 20s (centigrade) during the day to -15c at night. To deal with such a wide temperature range, your clothing and equipment strategy should be based on combining many thin layers that you build up and take off as the weather dictates. Kilimanjaro National Park has a strict 15kg per porter limit for your main equipment bag, which includes your sleeping bag. This will be more than enough for your needs on the mountain. Before you leave the hotel to begin the climb, your bag will be weighed, and if it is overweight, you will be required to remove items and leave them at the hotel.
